Here is what that study found, the other reasons fasting sugar runs high, what Ayurveda said about evening meals long before glucometers, and a four-step evening routine.
Late dinner and blood sugar: the 10 pm vs 6 pm trial
Researchers in the US gave 20 healthy volunteers (10 men, 10 women) the same dinner on two days. Once at 6 pm. Once at 10 pm. Everyone went to bed at 11 pm both times.
- After the late dinner, the peak blood sugar was about 18% higher.
- Overnight fat burning was about 10% lower.
- The effect was bigger in people who usually sleep early. In the lead researcher's words, the effect "varies greatly between people and depends on their usual bedtime."
These were healthy people. So the result shows how timing alone moves blood sugar. The trial did not test people with diabetes.
Why is my fasting sugar high in the morning? Three reasons
- The dawn phenomenon. Mayo Clinic describes an early-morning rise in blood sugar in people with diabetes, usually between 4 am and 8 am. The cause is not fully clear. But hormones released overnight (such as growth hormone and cortisol) are thought to make the body less sensitive to insulin.
- A carbohydrate snack at bedtime. Mayo lists this as a common cause of high morning sugar. The late-dinner trial shows why: food eaten close to sleep is handled worse.
- Not getting the right dose of diabetes medicine or insulin the night before. Only your doctor can change this. Never change it yourself.
How to tell which one it is: Mayo says your doctor may ask you to check sugar in the early-morning hours, or use a continuous glucose monitor. That shows whether the rise is the dawn phenomenon or something you ate. Keep a note of dinner time and bedtime snacks for a week. Take it to your appointment.
Best time to eat dinner for diabetics: what Ayurveda says
- Dinner before sunset: the old books say eat the evening meal before sunset, because digestion slows once the sun sets. After sunset, only liquid food.
- No curd at night, ever: the old Ayurveda book of Charaka says curd should not be eaten at night, should not be heated, and should be eaten mixed with ghee, sugar, moong soup, honey or amla (Sutra chapter 7). He also lists curd among the causes of prameha, the old name for sugar disease (Chikitsa chapter 6, verse 4).
- Too much sleep and sitting in comfort open Charaka's list of prameha causes (Chikitsa chapter 6, verse 4). A heavy dinner followed straight by bed is the exact pattern he warns about.
- Night sleep is the best sleep (Sutra chapter 21, verse 59). Daytime sleep makes the body heavy (verse 44). Eat early so you can sleep on time. Not so you can nap tomorrow.
On late dinner and blood sugar, the trial and the old books say the same thing from two directions: eat early, eat light, then let the body rest.
Late dinner and blood sugar: the 4-step evening routine
- Move dinner earlier. Before sunset if you can. If work makes that impossible, an hour earlier than now is still a gain. The trial compared 6 pm with 10 pm, and the difference was large.
- Make it light. One-pot khichdi or daliya, a full katori of dal, vegetables. No dahi at night (Charaka). No mithai (jaggery sweets are on his prameha list).
- Walk 10 minutes after. In a trial of people with type 2 diabetes, a 10-minute walk after each meal cut post-meal sugar by 12% overall, and by 22% after the evening meal. The old book of Sushruta says: sit comfortably, then take a short walk.
- Nothing with carbohydrates at bedtime. That is Mayo's advice, word for word. If you need something, make it water. Then bed, on time.
What to eat at night for diabetes, now that late dinner and blood sugar are sorted
Have | Skip | Why |
|---|---|---|
Moong dal khichdi, 1 tsp ghee | Dahi, raita | Charaka: no curd at night; curd causes prameha |
Vegetable jau (barley) daliya | Maida roti, naan, white rice by the plateful | Barley GI 28 vs white rice 73; Charaka names barley for prameha |
Moong soup with one jowar roti | Mithai, gur chikki, kheer | Jaggery and milk sweets are on Charaka's prameha list; WHO counts them as free sugar |
Warm water after the meal | Bedtime snack, biscuits, fruit at 11 pm | Mayo: avoid carbohydrates at bedtime |
Full plate guidance: rice or roti for diabetes. And takra (chaas) belongs at lunch. The old book Ashtanga Hridaya calls it light, good for digestion, and reducing heaviness (chapter 5, verses 33–34).
