Here is how much to take, how to take it, and the three mistakes that make it useless or unsafe.
Isabgol for cholesterol: what the studies found
- Scientists put together 28 studies. About 10 grams of isabgol a day, for at least 3 weeks, lowered bad cholesterol (LDL) by about 13 points (13 mg/dL). This is from Harvard Health's summary of the research.
- The US food authority (FDA) allows a heart-health claim on foods that give 7 grams or more of fibre from isabgol a day. Very few foods get this claim.
13 points is not magic. But it is real, it is cheap, and it adds to the other changes in this series.
How does isabgol for cholesterol work?
Isabgol is a fibre that turns into a thick gel in water. In the stomach, this gel is thought to catch bile and cholesterol and carry them out of the body with the stool. Less cholesterol goes back into the blood. Simple.
Isabgol dosage for cholesterol: how much?
When | How much |
|---|---|
Week 1 | About 5 grams, once a day, with a full glass of water |
Week 2 onwards | About 5 grams, twice a day (about 10 grams in total) |
How many spoons? | Spoons differ by brand. Check your packet for how many spoons make 5 grams |
Always | Follow the dose on your packet, and your doctor's advice |
The 28 studies used about 10 grams a day. Starting with less lets your stomach get used to it. Give it at least 3 weeks before you judge.
How to take isabgol for cholesterol, step by step
- Take a full glass of water. About 240 ml (8 ounces). The US medicine guide says this much liquid is needed every time.
- Mix just before drinking. Stir the isabgol into the water and drink it right away, before it turns thick. The medicine guide says to mix it just before use.
- Drink enough water through the day. The medicine guide says liquid is needed to prevent side effects.
- Best times: morning, and at bedtime. Keep it away from your tablets (see below).
- Plain isabgol only. Buy the plain husk. Flavoured versions may have added sugar. Read the packet.
3 mistakes that make isabgol useless or unsafe
- Taking it with your tablets. Isabgol can stop medicines from being absorbed. The US medicine guide (MedlinePlus) says to keep aspirin and some other medicines 3 hours away from isabgol. It does not list every medicine, so ask your doctor or chemist about yours. Safe habit: isabgol in the morning and at bedtime, tablets with meals.
- Taking it with too little water. The US medicine guide says a full glass (240 ml) every time, to prevent side effects. Trouble swallowing is one of the side effects it lists.
- Taking it dry or in hot chai. The medicine guide says to mix it in liquid. Plain water at room temperature is simplest.
Ask your doctor first if you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, bleeding from the back passage, a blocked intestine, or trouble swallowing. Also if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is the full list from the US medicine guide.
Stop and call your doctor if you get stomach pain, trouble breathing or swallowing, rash, itching, nausea or vomiting.
What about Ayurveda?
Honest note: isabgol is not named in the Charaka Samhita verses we checked for high cholesterol or body fat. Its place in this series comes from modern studies, not the old books. What the old books do say: for extra body fat, Charaka names jau (barley), moong, kulthi, parwal and amla, and tells you to exercise and avoid daytime sleep. Isabgol fits beside those, not instead of them.
