How to Lower Triglycerides: The Line on Your Report Nobody Explains

How to Lower Triglycerides: The Line on Your Report Nobody Explains

The sweets raise this line more than the oil does.

Your cholesterol report has a line called triglycerides. Most people skip it. The doctor says "it's a bit high" and moves on. But this number has its own story, and it is not the same as cholesterol. Here is what it means, and how to lower triglycerides with changes you can make this week.

What are triglycerides?

Mayo Clinic explains it simply. Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood. When you eat more than your body needs right now, the extra is turned into triglycerides and stored as body fat. Between meals, the body takes some back out for energy.

So triglycerides are the "extra food" number. Cholesterol (LDL) is more about the type of fat you eat. Triglycerides are more about how much extra you eat, and especially how much sugar.

Triglycerides normal range

Your number (mg/dL)
What it means
Below 150
Healthy
150 to 199
Borderline high
200 to 499
High
500 or above
Very high. See a doctor at once.

Source: Mayo Clinic. India's heart doctors (CSI) also use below 150 as the goal.

Why 500 is urgent: Mayo Clinic says extremely high triglycerides can cause a sudden, painful swelling of the pancreas. India's heart doctors say that at this level, medicine is given mainly to prevent that. Do not try to fix a number above 500 with diet alone.

Before how to lower triglycerides: what raises them (it's not mainly the oil)

Mayo Clinic lists these as the main causes:

  • Sugar and white flour. "Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and foods made with white flour or fructose, can increase triglycerides." In Indian terms: mithai, cold drinks, biscuits, maida bread, naan, and the sugar in your chai.
  • Alcohol. Mayo says alcohol has "a particularly potent effect on triglycerides." Beer and whisky both count.
  • Eating more than you burn. The extra becomes triglycerides and then body fat.

This surprises people. They ask how to lower triglycerides, cut ghee and oil, and the number stays high. Because the problem was the gulab jamun, the cold drink and the evening peg, not the tadka.

How to lower triglycerides: 6 changes

These are the steps Mayo Clinic lists, made Indian.

  1. Cut the sugar first. No sugar in chai. No cold drinks. Mithai only on festivals. Gur and honey count as sugar too (the World Health Organization says so). (Read: gur vs sugar.)
  2. Swap maida for jau or whole wheat. White flour is on Mayo's list. Jau roti or jau daliya instead of bread, naan and biscuits.
  3. Stop or limit alcohol. Mayo says limit it, and stop completely if your level is very high.
  4. Walk 30 minutes most days. Mayo's advice. One easy way: 10 minutes after each meal, three times a day. (Read: walking after meals.)
  5. Lose a little weight if you are overweight. Mayo says this helps when triglycerides are mildly or moderately high. Eating less at dinner is the easiest place to start.
  6. Choose better fats. Mayo says plant fats like nuts and seeds, and no vanaspati (trans fat). Cook in mustard oil. A few almonds instead of namkeen. (Read: 5 easy kitchen swaps.)

Do not expect medicine for a mildly high number. India's heart doctors (CSI) say for triglycerides between 150 and 499, there is no role for the usual triglyceride tablets (fibrates). Food, walking and sugar control are the treatment. The doctor will work on your LDL and non-HDL cholesterol instead. (Read: how to read your report.)

What the old Ayurveda books say

The word triglycerides is modern. But the old book Charaka Samhita describes the same cause. It says extra body fat comes from a "heavy, sweet, cold and fatty diet", too little exercise and sleeping in the day. Sweet and cold are first on the list, which matches what Mayo says about sugar and cold drinks. Charaka's answer is the same too: jau, moong, amla, exercise, and no daytime sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Not mainly. Mayo Clinic says sugar, white flour and alcohol have the strongest effect on triglycerides. Fat matters for LDL cholesterol. So if your triglycerides are high, look at the mithai, the chai sugar and the drinks before the oil.

Cut sugar, sweets, maida and cold drinks. Stop or limit alcohol. Walk 30 minutes most days. Lose a little weight if you are overweight. Swap vanaspati for mustard oil and namkeen for a few almonds. These are the steps Mayo Clinic lists, made Indian. Give it 3 months, then re-test.

Below 150 mg/dL is healthy. 150 to 199 is borderline high. 200 to 499 is high. 500 or above is very high and needs a doctor at once, because it can cause a painful swelling of the pancreas.

Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood. When you eat more than your body needs, the extra is turned into triglycerides and stored as body fat. A high number raises your risk of heart disease. A normal level is below 150.
