Foods to Avoid at Night: Stop Eating These 5 Things After Dark

Foods to Avoid at Night: Stop Eating These 5 Things After Dark

Dt. Roshni Ali

Five foods that are common at Indian dinners, and best kept for daytime or skipped.

Most Indian families eat their heaviest meal of the day at the worst possible time: late at night. If you're working on high cholesterol, knowing the foods to avoid at night matters as much as knowing what to eat. Ayurveda has said so for centuries, and a modern trial now shows the body really does handle a late, heavy meal worse.

Here are five foods to drop after dark, the classical rule behind each, and what to eat instead.

Why night eating is different: agni goes quiet

What Ayurveda says: dinner should ideally be eaten before sunset, "as the digestive fire becomes dormant once the sun sets." Classical guidance even suggests taking only liquid food after sunset.

What a modern trial found: 20 healthy adults ate the same dinner on two occasions, once at 10 PM and once at 6 PM. The late dinner led to higher blood sugar and less fat burning overnight (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2020).

Two very different systems of knowledge, the same conclusion: what you eat at night, and when, matters. And Charaka is clear about the kind of food that causes excess meda (body fat): a "heavy, sweet, cold and fatty diet" (Charaka Sutra 21/4). Keep that phrase in mind as you read the list.

5 foods to avoid at night (and what to have instead)

1. Dahi and raita: is curd good at night?

This is the one that surprises people, because dahi feels light and healthy. But Charaka is direct: "Curd should not be consumed at night... It should not be heated also" (Charaka Sutra 7/61-62). Ayurvedic scholars classify curd at night as     , an incompatibility of timing.

Instead: have dahi in the daytime, and never plain: Charaka says curd should be mixed with ghee, sugar, moong soup, honey or amla. Or choose buttermilk (takra), which Ayurveda describes as light and digestive, and which reduces kapha.

2. Pakoras, namkeen, puri and anything fried

Fried snacks tick two of Charaka's four boxes at once: heavy and fatty. They also tend to be fried in fats that raise cholesterol. Trans fat, found mostly in vanaspati used for fried snacks and mithai, raises LDL and lowers HDL, the worst possible combination.

Instead: if you need a crunchy side, have roasted papad or roasted chana. Better still, skip the side at dinner entirely.

3. Mithai after dinner

The after-dinner sweet is an Indian tradition, but it's heavy and sweet: two more of Charaka's four causes of excess meda, eaten exactly when digestion is weakest.

Instead: if you can't skip it, have your sweet at lunch, in a small portion. After dinner, a pinch of saunf (fennel) is the traditional mouth-freshener.

4. Fruit milkshakes and smoothies

A banana shake or mango smoothie sounds healthy. But classical Ayurveda lists "sour things with milk" as viruddha ahara, an incompatible food combination (Charaka Sutra 26). The same chapter lists fish with milk as incompatible too.

Instead: eat fruit on its own, during the day. Keep milk separate.

5. Honey in hot milk or hot water: the side effects Ayurveda warns about

Honey in hot water or hot milk is a popular home remedy. But Ayurveda is clear about the heat: "the use of hot or boiled honey is forbidden", and taking hot water after honey is listed as unwholesome (Charaka Sutra 26; Sushruta Sutra 20). Scholars classify heating honey as sanskar viruddha, an incompatibility created by processing.

Instead: Ayurveda says honey should never be taken with warm     water, and not by someone who is overheated. Add honey only to cool or room-temperature water. Charaka actually recommends honey water as a drink for people with excess meda (Charaka Sutra 21/26), just never warm or hot.

Best time to eat dinner according to Ayurveda

Avoiding the wrong foods at night is half the job. The other half is timing.

Ayurveda
Modern trial
When
Before sunset
6 PM did better than 10 PM
Why
Digestive fire becomes dormant after sunset
Late dinner led to higher blood sugar and less fat burning
After sunset
Only liquid food

Can't eat before sunset because of work? Move dinner as early as you realistically can, keep it light, and leave a few hours between dinner and bed. Then take a short walk after eating (see our blog on walking after meals).

What to eat for dinner for high cholesterol

Now that you know the foods to avoid at night, here's what a light dinner can look like:

  • A dal: moong or masoor. Pulses lowered LDL cholesterol in a meta-analysis of trials, and Charaka names mudga (moong) among foods for excess meda.
  • A simple sabzi: lauki, tori, palak or other seasonal vegetables, cooked in a little mustard oil.
  • One or two rotis: jau (barley) or whole wheat. Charaka recommends yava (barley) for excess meda.
  • A garlic tadka in the dal. Garlic lowered total and LDL cholesterol in people with high levels, over 2 months or more.
  • To drink: buttermilk, or lukewarm water. No dahi, no milkshake.

Cutting out foods to avoid at night? Add daily support. Ayuvya Cholest Pro Juice is made for people working on healthy cholesterol levels. Make it part of your daily routine alongside a lighter dinner.
