3 rules before the list
- Eat the fruit. Do not drink the juice. One glass of juice has the sugar of many fruits, and no fibre. WHO counts juice sugar like added sugar.
- Pick fruits that raise sugar slowly. Scientists give every food a number called GI. It tells how fast the food raises blood sugar. Below 55 is good. Above 70 is bad. We give the GI number for each fruit below.
- Test, don't guess. If you have a sugar machine at home, check 1 to 2 hours after eating a new fruit. After a meal, sugar should stay below 180. Your own reading is the best guide.
2 rules from Ayurveda:
- No fruit with milk. The old book Charaka Samhita says sour things and milk should not be eaten together. So no milkshake, no fruit in milk.
- No banana with chaas (buttermilk). An old Ayurveda food book (Bhojanakutuhala) says these two do not go together.
Some people say "eat fruit only on an empty stomach". We did not find this rule in the old books. In fact, amla is told to be eaten with food.
1. Apple: the safest fruit for diabetes (GI 36)
Apple raises sugar slowly. Its GI number is 36, which is very good. One apple at 4 PM, instead of biscuits, is the easiest change you can make.
How to eat: one whole apple, with the skin. Not apple juice.
2. Orange and mosambi: easy fruits for diabetes (GI 43)
Orange has a GI of 43. Good. But orange juice is 50, and the fibre is gone. One glass of juice takes 3 to 4 oranges.
How to eat: peel it and eat the pieces. Skip the juice shop.
3. Amla: the fruit the old books name for sugar
The Charaka Samhita is a very old Ayurveda book. It says: people who regularly eat roasted barley (jau), moong and amla do not get prameha. Prameha is the old name for sugar disease. Another old doctor, Sushruta, says to eat amla with your meal.
Modern studies on amla are mostly about cholesterol, not sugar. In one study, amla lowered bad cholesterol. This matters, because sugar patients have double the risk of heart disease. (Read: diabetes and cholesterol.)
How to eat: one fresh amla with lunch, or amla chutney. Not amla murabba or amla candy. Those are full of sugar.
4. Jamun: the truth about the most famous of all fruits for diabetes
Ask anyone about fruits for diabetes and they will say jamun. Shops sell jamun seed powder as a cure. Here is what studies really found:
- Scientists put together 13 studies, 802 people. Jamun lowered fasting sugar by a small amount (about 14 points). The 3-month sugar average (HbA1c) did not change much. The scientists said the proof is weak.
- Dr Mahesh D M, a diabetes doctor at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, says: "Jamun seed powder should not be considered a treatment or cure for diabetes."
How to eat: enjoy jamun in season, as a fruit. Do not stop or reduce your medicine for jamun powder.
5. Banana or mango: yes, but half
Banana and mango both have a GI of 51. That is okay, but just okay. And one whole fruit has a lot of sugar. So eat half a banana, or 3 to 4 slices of mango, with your meal. Not a whole one, and not alone.
Remember the 2 Ayurveda rules: no mango with milk (so no mango shake, no aamras with milk). No banana with chaas.
How to eat: half, with food. Check your sugar after, the first few times.
