Here are seven diabetes and cholesterol fixes, each with the study or the Charaka verse behind it.
1. Walk 10 minutes after every meal: the first fix for diabetes and cholesterol
Sofa after dinner → 10 minutes on the lane or terrace
For sugar: in a trial of 41 people with type 2 diabetes, 10 minutes of walking after each meal cut post-meal sugar by 12% compared with one 30-minute walk, and by 22% after dinner (Reynolds et al., 2016).
For cholesterol: regular aerobic exercise raised HDL ("good") cholesterol by about 2.5 mg/dL, at about 120 minutes a week (Kodama et al., 2007). Three 10-minute walks a day gets you there in four days.
Sushruta: "After meals, we should sit comfortably like a king and then have a short walk." Charaka names sedentary comfort as a cause of prameha (Chikitsa 6/4) and lack of exercise as a cause of excess meda (Sutra 21/4).
Full plan: walking after meals for blood sugar.
2. Switch your roti to jau or jowar: a diabetic diet for cholesterol starts here
Maida, or wheat alone → Jau atta (barley) mixed 1:1 with wheat, or jowar roti
Barley carries beta-glucan, a soluble fibre. The US FDA allows a heart-health claim for foods providing 3 g of beta-glucan a day from whole oats or barley.
Barley (yava) is the one food Charaka names in both chapters: barley dishes for prameha (Chikitsa 6/18-24), and "persons habitually taking roasted barley... do not suffer from prameha" (6/46-48); yava powder with amla for excess meda (Sutra 21/23). Jowar (jurnahva) is also on the meda list (21/25).
Start half-and-half if pure jau feels dry. Use old (aged) rice when you eat rice: Charaka recommends old rice with moong soup for prameha (6/36).
3. Make dal the biggest katori: foods for diabetes and cholesterol
A small bowl of thin dal → A full katori of moong, arhar or kulthi, with garlic tadka
About one serving of pulses a day (around 130 g) significantly lowered LDL in a meta-analysis of trials (Ha et al., 2014).
Garlic lowered total cholesterol by about 17 mg/dL and LDL by about 9 mg/dL over more than 2 months (Ried et al., 2013).
Moong (mudga) is on both of Charaka's lists: for prameha (Chikitsa 6/46-48) and for excess meda, with kulthi and arhar (Sutra 21/25).

4. Cooking oil for diabetics: mustard oil in the kadhai, ghee by the teaspoon
Vanaspati, or frying in ghee → Mustard oil for cooking; 1 tsp ghee on top
Trans fat raises LDL and lowers HDL (Mayo Clinic); in India it is "majorly present in vanaspati" (FSSAI coverage). FSSAI caps trans fat at 2% since January 2022.
Ghee is about 62% saturated fat (USDA), and saturated fat raises LDL (NHLBI). Mustard oil is about 59% monounsaturated (USDA), and replacing saturated with unsaturated fat lowers LDL (Harvard).
Bhavaprakasha: mustard oil reduces kapha and meda, but aggravates pitta, so normal cooking amounts. Charaka calls ghee the best of fats (Sutra 13/13) and in the same chapter says those with excess kapha and meda are not advised to take fats as therapy (13/53). Warm water after ghee (13/22); never cold things after it (Sutra 26).
5. Diabetic snacks: replace the 4 PM namkeen
Namkeen, biscuits, gur chikki → Roasted chana, a few almonds, 1 tsp javas (alsi) chutney
Nuts lowered LDL by 7.4% in a pooled analysis of trials (Sabaté et al.); roasted chana counts toward the daily pulses above.
Whole flaxseed lowered total cholesterol by about 8 mg/dL and LDL by about 6 mg/dL across 28 studies; the oil did not (Pan et al., 2009).
Gur is not a free pass: WHO counts every added sugar, and Charaka names jaggery preparations as a cause of prameha (Chikitsa 6/4).
Alsi is heavy, unctuous and hot, and increases kapha and pitta (Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra 6), so one measured tablespoon a day, ground, with food: flaxseed for cholesterol.
6. Eat dinner early and light: the diabetes and cholesterol dinner
Heavy dinner at 10 PM, dahi on the side → Moong khichdi or jau daliya by sunset; takra at lunch instead of dahi
In a trial of 20 adults, the same dinner eaten at 10 PM instead of 6 PM led to higher blood sugar and less fat burning overnight (Gu et al., 2020). And the walking trial's biggest effect came after the evening meal.
Dinner before sunset, "as the digestive fire becomes dormant once the sun sets." Curd: never at night, never heated, and only mixed with ghee, sugar, moong soup, honey or amla (Charaka Sutra 7); Charaka also lists curds among the causes of prameha (Chikitsa 6/4). Takra (buttermilk) is light, digestive and reduces kapha (Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra 5/33-34). Daytime sleep is on both cause lists, so no lying down after lunch either.

7. Know your two numbers, and your own LDL target for diabetics
With diabetes and cholesterol, the lab's printout can mislead you. It says LDL below 100 is normal. If you have diabetes, that is not your target. India's Cardiological Society (CSI) 2024 guidelines put people with diabetes in the high-risk group: LDL below 70 mg/dL and non-HDL below 100. So an LDL of 85 looks "normal" on paper and is still above target for you.
Two tests, one visit: HbA1c (target 7% or below per India's Health Ministry workflow) and a lipid profile (yearly after 40, per the American Diabetes Association's standards). Ask your doctor for your own LDL target. Guides: HbA1c normal range and lipid profile normal range.
Diabetes and cholesterol: the 7 fixes at a glance
Fix | Helps sugar because | Helps cholesterol because |
|---|---|---|
10-min walk after meals | −22% post-dinner sugar (Reynolds 2016) | HDL +2.5 mg/dL with regular exercise (Kodama 2007) |
Jau or jowar roti | Charaka: barley for prameha | 3 g/day beta-glucan, FDA heart claim |
Dal as the biggest katori | Charaka: moong for prameha | Pulses lowered LDL (Ha 2014); garlic −9 mg/dL LDL (Ried 2013) |
Mustard oil; ghee by teaspoon | Bhavaprakasha: reduces kapha and meda | Less saturated and trans fat (USDA, FSSAI, NHLBI) |
Chana, almonds, alsi instead of namkeen | No gur, no fried snack (Charaka 6/4; WHO) | Nuts −7.4% LDL; flaxseed −6 mg/dL LDL |
Early light dinner, takra not dahi | 10 PM dinner raised sugar (Gu 2020); curd causes prameha (Charaka) | Lighter, earlier, no night-time fat load |
Know both numbers | HbA1c 7% or below | LDL below 70 for diabetics (CSI 2024) |
