Causes of Hyperpigmentation You Should Know

1. Sun exposure: One of the most common factors of hyperpigmentation is harmful UV rays from the sun, which increase melanin production in the skin. Too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn and tanning.

2. Hormonal changes: Melasm, menopause, and oral contraceptive use can cause hyperpigmentation. This is also known as melasma-related hyperpigmentation.

3. Inflammatory and Injury: Skin conditions like; acne, eczema, psoriasis, and allergic reactions can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Trauma to the skin, like cuts, burns, or surgeries, can also lead to dark spots.

4. Age: Aging is one of the most noticeable signs of hyperpigmentation. As we age, the skin’s natural renewal process slows down which leads to an increase in the production of melanin in the body.

5. Medicines and chemicals: Taking certain medications, like chemotherapy drugs, antimalarial drugs, and hormonal treatments, can cause skin inflammation.

Most Affected Areas of Hyperpigmentation

Face: Cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes

Hands: Age spots on the backs of the hands

Shoulders: Discoloration from sun exposure

Neck: Dark patches, often seen in certain skin types

Back: Spots that may appear with sun exposure

Ayurvedic Point of View on Hyperpigmentation

According to Ayurveda, hyperpigmentation is related to the Pitta dosha and is a sign of an imbalance in the body. There are three doshas in the human body known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha which are different energies in the body. Pitta is associated with heat, metabolism, and digestion. When Pitta is balanced, it supports skin health and gives it a radiant appearance.

However, if the Pitta dosha gets imbalanced due to stress, wrong food choices, or excessive exposure to sunlight it can create heat in the body. This can result in the skin becoming dark in some areas a condition referred to as hyperpigmentation.

To treat hyperpigmentation, Ayurveda focuses on bringing Pitta back into balance. This includes eating calming foods like cucumbers and melons while avoiding anything that causes stress. By balancing the doshas, Ayurveda aims to improve skin health and overall well-being.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Hyperpigmentation

1. Panchakarma: It is a cleansing process necessary for the reduction of toxins in the body in order to address doshas. Some treatments including oil massages and herb baths are useful for better skin and treatment of pigmentation.

2. Diet Modifications: Consuming cold foods is good. Add new season fruits and vegetables, particularly cucumber, melons, and fresh green vegetables like spinach and most vegetables. Steer clear of irritants such as spicy & fried foods that can cause the increase in Pitta.

3. Stress Management: Stress in the body can worsen the Pitta dosha. Simple exercises like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can positively impact stress levels, promoting a healthier body and skin.

4. Hydration and Moisturization: A very important thing to do to ensure that a person has healthy skin is to make sure that he or she drinks a lot of water. Include plenty of water and herbal teas in your diet. Here it is recommended that one should use natural moisturizers such as aloe vera or coconut oil to keep the skin well moisturized.

5. Herbal Formulations: Some of the herbs used in Ayurveda to treat hyperpigmentation include haldi or turmeric, neem, and sandalwood. These can be applied in the form of masks or topical applications to improve the skin complexion as well as fight hyper-pigmentation.

Home Remedies to Reduce Hyperpigmentation

1. Turmeric: Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties which helps in lightening the dark spots. Applying Paste of turmeric powder and honey or yogurt on dark areas for 20 minutes can help in reducing hyperpigmentation on the skin.

2. Aloe Vera: Aloe vera has healing properties that can reduce pigmentation over time. Applying fresh aloe vera gel directly to the skin helps in soothing the skin and provides a refreshing appearance to your body.

3. Sandalwood: Sandalwood is known for its cooling effect. Applying a paste of sandalwood powder and rose water to the dark spots helps brighten the skin and gives radiance to it.

4. Neem: Neem has antibacterial properties. Apply the paste of neem leaves on the skin for 15 minutes. This ayurvedic face pack for pigmentation helps to achieve glowing and smooth skin.

5. Liquorice: Liquorice contains glabridin, Applying the paste of Liquorice powder for 30 minutes on the dark spots helps in lightening skin discoloration.

Adopting these healthy habits in your daily routine helps in making your skin flawless and healthy. If you are experiencing an excessive amount of dark spots on your body.
