High cholesterol symptoms: why there usually are none
The US heart institute (NHLBI) says high LDL, the bad cholesterol, "usually does not cause symptoms". Most people learn they have it from a blood test during a routine check-up.
Think of it like this. Cholesterol slowly sticks to the inside of your blood pipes. It does not hurt. You do not feel it. For years, nothing happens. Then one day the pipe is too narrow. That is why doctors call it silent.
Signs of high cholesterol: 2 things you may see only when it is very high
NHLBI says that when cholesterol is very high, there can be visible signs:
- Fatty deposits on the skin.
- A grey ring around the coloured part of the eye.
If you see either, see a doctor. But do not wait for high cholesterol symptoms to appear. Most people with high cholesterol never get these signs. The number is high long before anything shows.
No high cholesterol symptoms, yet 1 in 4 Indians has it
India's biggest health survey, ICMR-INDIAB, found that 24 out of every 100 Indian adults have high cholesterol. The same survey found 11 in 100 have diabetes and 15 in 100 are close to it.
And the two go together. The US diabetes institute (NIDDK) says people with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to get heart disease or a stroke. If you have sugar, your cholesterol test matters even more. (Read: diabetes and cholesterol.)
When to test cholesterol, and how often
Who | How often | Says who |
|---|---|---|
Everyone | First test by age 18 | India's heart doctors (CSI, 2024) |
Younger adults | Every 5 years | MedlinePlus (US) |
Men 45 to 65, women 55 to 65 | Every 1 to 2 years | MedlinePlus |
Over 65 | Every year | MedlinePlus |
Diabetes, high BP, or on treatment | As your doctor says, usually yearly | Your doctor |
Good news: you do not need to fast for the test. India's heart doctors (CSI) accept a non-fasting sample. Some labs still ask for a 9 to 12 hour fast. Follow your lab. The test is called a lipid profile.
What the report means, in 3 lines
- LDL (bad cholesterol): below 100 is normal. If you have diabetes or high BP, your target is below 70 (CSI).
- HDL (good cholesterol): higher is better. 60 or more is best. Below 40 for men, or 50 for women, is low.
- Triglycerides: below 150.

"No high cholesterol symptoms, so I stopped." The mistake we see most
Many people start a diet, a juice or a medicine. After some weeks they feel the same as before, so they stop. But feeling the same is normal, because high cholesterol never made you feel bad in the first place. The only proof is the number.
What the old books say: the Charaka Samhita says extra body fat comes from a heavy, sweet, cold and oily diet, no exercise and sleeping in the day. It does not say you will feel it. It says change the habits. The old books and the blood test agree: do not go by how you feel. Go by what you do, and what the number says.
- Test before you start any change. This is your starting number.
- Make the changes for 3 months: food, walking, early dinner.
- Test again at 3 months. Compare. Now you know.
- Never stop a medicine because you feel fine. Show the new report to your doctor first.
No high cholesterol symptoms, but a high number? Start daily support. Ayuvya Cholest Pro Juice is made for people who want healthy cholesterol levels. Take it with the food changes in this series, and test again after 3 months.
