What is Memory (Smriti) According to Ayurveda?
Smriti is defined as remembering or recollecting the information / knowledge of anything that is perceived through observing, hearing or experiencing.
Smriti means memory, according to classical ayurvedic texts smriti does not function independently but it arises from the coordinated interaction of Atma (self), Mana (mind), Indriya (sense organs), and Buddhi (intellect).
It is considered as the vital component of Pragya (wisdom), along with Dhee (comprehension) and Dhriti (retention). Impairment of smriti leads to intellectual error which is considered as a fundamental cause of disease.
Memory and the Doshas
In ayurveda memory (smriti) is mainly influenced by the balance of three doshas – vata dosha, kapha dosha, and pitta dosha. Each dosha contributes differently in learning, retention, recalling, and mental clarity. When they are in a balanced state they support healthy function but when imbalanced they can affect memory in many ways.
- Vata Dosha and Memory: vata dosha is responsible for movement, communication and the nervous system. When vata dosha gets imbalanced it can cause forgetfulness, difficulty in concentration and anxiety.
- Pitta Dosha: is responsible for intelligence, understanding and analytic thinking. When there is an imbalance in pitta dosha it causes mental burnout, irritability which affects focus, and being impatient during learning, difficulty in retaining information under stress.
- Kapha Dosha: provides stability, nourishment and endurance. It is also associated with long term memory and retention. When kapha dosha is aggravated it causes slow pace in learning and also causes lack of motivation.
Types of Memory According to Ayurveda
Ayurveda does not classify memory as short term or long term as the modern science does.
It explains memory through concepts such as Smriti (memory), Dhi (learning), and Dhriti (retention and mental stability). Together these functions determine how well a person can learn, store and recall information.
- Dhi (Learning): is the ability through which understanding and processing the information becomes easy. It is the first step of memory formation. When Dhi is stronger a person is able to grasp new concepts quickly.
- Dhriti (Retention and Storage): is the ability to retain information. It also helps the mind to hold on to knowledge and helps in storing it for a longer period of time.
- Smriti (Recall and Recollection): is the ability to restore the information when needed. It allows a person to remember past experiences, knowledge, names, events etc.
