WHY DO JOINTS HURT? AN AYURVEDIC EXPLANATION.

Joint discomfort and pain are very common problems affecting many individuals globally. While typical medical treatments may provide temporary relief from pain they may not address the underlying cause and may often have side effects.

When your cartilage wears out over time, you get what is known as osteoarthritis. It is a common condition which affects millions of people worldwide causing joint pain, stiffness and inflammation.

Ayurvedic View on Joint Pain (Sandhi Vaat)

According to ayurveda Joint Pain (Sandhi Vaat) primarily occurs due to the following factors:

1. Dosha Imbalance

  • Vata Imbalance: It is the primary dosha which is involved in joint disorders. It causes dryness, cracking sounds, tissue degeneration and pain that often migrates in between the joints, typically without swelling. Pain usually increases with movement and improves with rest.
  • Pitta Imbalance: It manifests as hot, red, swollen, inflamed joints. Swelling feels warm with visible signs of inflammation. Pain tends to worsen during the middle of the day and in hot weather.
  • Kapha Imbalance: It creates stiffness, heaviness, and swelling leading to restricted movements. Swelling is usually cold, pain is usually dull and constant, typically worsening during cold and damp weather.

2. Ama Formation

Ama accumulates due to poor digestion, it gets deposits in joints which causes stiffness, inflammation and blocks proper nutrition to joint tissues.

3. Dhatu (Tissue) Dysfunction

  • Asthi dhatu (bone tissue) affects joint structure
  • Majja (bone marrow) impacts joint lubrication
  • Mamsa (muscle tissue) influences joint stability
  • Snayu (ligament) affecting joint flexibility

Ayurvedic Herbs That Support Joint Pain

  • Turmeric (Haldi): Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. The main active compound in turmeric is curcumin, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. It inhibits the production of compounds that causes swelling and discomfort in the joints, acting much like a natural painkiller.
  • Ashwagandha: It is a powerful adaptogenic herb in ayurvedic tradition. Often called indian ginseng which helps the body to adapt to stress. Ashwagandha has anti-inflammatory properties and supports the repair of joint tissues.
  • Guggul: It is a resin extracted from commiphora mukul tree. It has a rich history of use in traditional ayurvedic formulas due to its ability to clear Ama or toxins from the body.
  • Shallaki: Boswellia or shallaki is a resin extracted from the tree. Used to treat joint disorder, the main component boswellic acid helps block the production of compounds that cause inflammation, reducing stiffness and improving joint flexibility.
  • Ginger (Adrak): It is more than just a flavour enhancer, it's a potent healer recognised in ayurveda for its warming, digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Joint Pain

Ayurveda recommends several kinds of remedies and lifestyle modification to manage joint pain. Here are some effective ayurvedic remedies for joint pain:

  • Herbal Paste: Incorporating herbal paste into the affected area of the joint. This paste is mainly made from herbs such as ginger, turmeric, fenugreek and can provide relief from joint pain.
  • Warm Herbal Drink: Consuming herbal drinks including ginger tea and turmeric milk can help reduce inflammation and joint pain.
  • Hot Water Bath: Soaking the affected joints in lukewarm water is highly effective and can help to reduce the inflammation and pain in joints.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Regular exercise can help in enhancing joint flexibility, and reduce stiffness. Also other stress management practices including meditation, deep breathing can minimize the level of stress and promote overall wellbeing.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Joint Pain

It is one of the most common conditions, leading to damage of joints. Some type of joint pain can also occur due to injury. This condition also leads to inflammation, pain and stiffness in the joint.

In ayurveda an imbalance in vata dosha can lead to joint pain. Ayurvedic therapies such as:

  • Panchkarma: Panchkarma provides detoxification and rejuvenation therapies. The ayurvedic therapies help to eliminate toxins from the body and also balance the three doshas - vaat, pitta and kapha which also helps in reducing inflammation.
  • Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Regular herbal oil massage with warm medicated oils can not only help to soothe joints but also helps in reducing stiffness.
  • Swedana: This therapy helps to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and alleviate pain. It is an herbal steam therapy that is commonly used for those who are suffering from joint pain or arthritis.

Conclusion

Managing joint pain is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine in India, offers a holistic and natural approach to addressing the root cause of joint pain. Ayurveda empowers you with gentle, effective and holistic options for lasting wellness.
